HFCS City - The Sweet and Sour Story

Out of pure curiosity, I whipped up some sweet and sour sauce to go over wild rice, pan-fried tofu, chicken strips (for the man), and formerly frozen stir-fry veggies. I had bought some cashews that I was supposed to toast, but I totally forgot in the whirlwind that is my cooking.

The ingredients were fairly simple:

- 2/3 c. orange marmalade

- 1/2 c. ketchup

- 2 tbsp soy sauce

- 2 tbsp brown sugar

- 2 tbsp lemon juice (though I think I added more)

- 1/2 tsp dry mustard

Unfortunately, both the marmalade and ketchup have high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) listed as an ingredient, as do my lovely animal crackers that I like eating. Now, I don't like marmalade (eck!), so I don't eat it. Ketchup -- I usually avoid -- used to have it with eggs and fries but not anymore. And the animal crackers I've learned to enjoy in moderation and stick to one serving or so.

In case you've been hiding under a rock, HFCS, which is popularly in soda and snacks, is NOT good for you. It is another one of those man-made mutations of something that was natural, and it wrecks havoc on your blood sugar, liver, and is the gateway to obesity. For more info, click HERE.

At any rate, here is the resulting dish, with a salsa/guac-ish "relish" for flavor. The dressing for this salad with a little bit of olive oil and lemon juice.

I think they make non-HFCS ketchup now, so that is definitely worth investigating. I've really come a long way in cutting down on this stuff since this hype came out about it. I've really cut down on my consumption of random snacks and candy, and for sure soda.

Don't worry, I mostly cook more healthfully than this, but truth be told, it WAS pretty good. Just gotta make the more natural version next time, requiring the replenishment of the pantry staples I used to make it.

  1. Did you hear that because HFCS has such a bad rep, that they decided to change the name to corn sugar?!
Surrre, spend money changing the NAME, not the actual problem! Grr..

The Return of My Favorite Things

Over the years, I've learned a lot about website optimization, SEO, and all the things I should have been doing with my blog to increase its hits.  Also during that time, I've encountered many blogs that are "well-optimized," and boy, do they feel impersonal.  So that means, I'm just going to carry on however I want (it's not like I'm making any money here [anymore -- yet??])! I'm going to review a few things, not because I was sent anything (though I'm still happy to do that -- contact me !), but because these are things that I use, and if you are so inclined, so should you! I will probably be adding more reviews here, since, let's be honest, they are what bring hits to the blog, and I want people to come and read so I don't feel like I'm writing to a cyber vortex! Invisibobble Hair Tie I have been using this for close to two years now, first tipped-off by a video by one of my favorite YouTube creators, FrmHeadtoToe .  Th...

Sharkies Prize Pack (giveaway)

It's giveaway time! On a long run recently, I took a couple packs of Sharkies Organic Sports Chews  with me to keep me going on a hot day.  I got through those 15 miles  eating these, versus normal gels.  I've been opting to eat chews over gels in my running nowadays because I just find them more palatable and easier on my stomach for some reason.  Plus, they do pack a few more calories, which is a good thing in this case. I normally associate cute little chews with candy, but these actually contain natural electrolytes.  Plus, they were light to carry and very tasty, too!  Each pack is about 140 calories.  The only downside I found to the sport chews is that they stuck to my teeth a tiny bit more than my normal choices, and the packaging gave me a fight at times.  This could easily be solved by conslidating them into a baggie pre-run, or eating them BEFORE running would be much easier than during.
