The "Welcome to the Club" Conflict

After my presentation at UCLA this week, I went out to dinner with one of my dissertation committee members, my lovely classmate who is also graduating, and a professor I had in 2006 when I was an undergrad.

I wanted to take photos of my food so badly, but I had to resist the urge.  Though I let my friends in on my blog (though have not sent the link to anyone yet, oops!) and feel free to photograph in front of them, this felt totally inappropriate.

What I will say, though, is that Vietnamese food in this area is really best in the San Gabriel Valley or certain parts of Orange County.  We dined in West Los Angeles. :$  Good effort, though.  They were veggie-friendly, too.

At the end of the meal, I whipped out my wallet, but they told me that my money was no good and that this was a celebratory dinner for me.  I insisted, especially since my classmate had also defended back in November, and I didn't want to be singled out.  But when two adult men (and a grown woman, which somehow I don't feel like one of these yet) keep insisting, I have to relent... right?

[On another note, my money must be dirty or rotten this week, as I've been getting treated out (e.g., from my boss) and such quite a few times since last week.]

They then said, "Welcome to the club."

Oh gosh... what club?  My professor from five years ago was one of my last influencers when it came to deciding to apply to graduate school, and he admitted that since that time, he did not recognize me anymore (we had communicated over phone/e-mail since then).  Did the fact that I became less nerdy make me a member of some exclusive club?  Does that mean I could still blog?  Will anyone care that while I have a 169-page (plus forepages) dissertation on my hands, I'm writing entries in my blog about "being a total couch slob"??

Other random notes:
- I owe my lovely classmate a lunch.
- My sister's blog banner is one of the funniest things I've seen this week.
- Lately, I've seen so much support from my friends, recent and old, even though I haven't been the best about keeping in touch.  It has been surprising and humbling.
- Someday, I'm going to be able to focus on my day job again.... o_O
- My little sister's birthday is next week... what do 14-year-olds like again??? #old
- I still don't know what they meant by "club".... s#%t.
- And I guess this means that my professors and I are on a first-name basis now, apparently. #awkward

P.S. Come back early next week... I'm probably going to be hosting another giveaway. :)

  1. Getting your PhD is a big deal, and I'm sure they were just welcoming you to that exclusive "club" of those who have not only completed the coursework, but the dissertaion as well.

The Return of My Favorite Things

Over the years, I've learned a lot about website optimization, SEO, and all the things I should have been doing with my blog to increase its hits.  Also during that time, I've encountered many blogs that are "well-optimized," and boy, do they feel impersonal.  So that means, I'm just going to carry on however I want (it's not like I'm making any money here [anymore -- yet??])! I'm going to review a few things, not because I was sent anything (though I'm still happy to do that -- contact me !), but because these are things that I use, and if you are so inclined, so should you! I will probably be adding more reviews here, since, let's be honest, they are what bring hits to the blog, and I want people to come and read so I don't feel like I'm writing to a cyber vortex! Invisibobble Hair Tie I have been using this for close to two years now, first tipped-off by a video by one of my favorite YouTube creators, FrmHeadtoToe .  Th...

Original Post: 3/10/11 Sunday, March 20 2011, the day I will run LA Marathon for the 4th time (and embark on my 8th 26.2 journey overall), will also be very special because it will mark the 5th year since I did my FIRST training run with the intention of running a marathon.  (Check out that life-changing post HERE ). Sharkies Prize Pack (giveaway)

It's giveaway time! On a long run recently, I took a couple packs of Sharkies Organic Sports Chews  with me to keep me going on a hot day.  I got through those 15 miles  eating these, versus normal gels.  I've been opting to eat chews over gels in my running nowadays because I just find them more palatable and easier on my stomach for some reason.  Plus, they do pack a few more calories, which is a good thing in this case. I normally associate cute little chews with candy, but these actually contain natural electrolytes.  Plus, they were light to carry and very tasty, too!  Each pack is about 140 calories.  The only downside I found to the sport chews is that they stuck to my teeth a tiny bit more than my normal choices, and the packaging gave me a fight at times.  This could easily be solved by conslidating them into a baggie pre-run, or eating them BEFORE running would be much easier than during.
