It's Just a Dress

I haven't updated on wedding plans since February.  Since I apparently have some Klout on the topic, I figure I should post something eventually.

Going through all these motions definitely makes me question and re-question our decision to actually have a ceremony.  I know that isn't the best thing to say, but the excitement hasn't really been where people have led me to believe it should be.  This is probably in part because I am not doing the whole bridal party thing -- if I haven't mentioned it before, the reason for that is to keep simplicity.  Of course, the trade-off is that the excitement seems to come from those, so hmmm.  [Fortunately, a number of my female friends have volunteered to keep things flowing that day so that things don't fall apart completely under my inexperienced watch.]

I recently went for my first expedition for a dress.  I'm not sure where I got the idea of "7 months prior" from, but I had procrastinated long enough and decided to take an initial stab.  As I was doing this, I reaffirmed my uncomfortable-ness when it comes to attention and that this is really just a freaking dress.

A couple of the "not-the-one"s:

Armed with a few pictures from the session, I decided that I would shop around a little bit more before deciding on one -- not "the" one, but "a" one.  While I can understand that people dream about this all of their lives and are set on a particular look, I just want one that is comfortable and not akin to a prom or quinceñera dress.  Oh, and within the budget -- I refuse to pay $1k for a dress that I will only rent or buy+wear once.

Finally, I just thought I'd mention I've been doing a lot of learning, reading, and introspection lately.  Marriage seems to amplify the need to know where you're at, so to speak, and no doubt there will need to be a lot of open-mindedness for everyone involved.

  1. I sorta felt like it was just a dress too, but actually looking at dresses and trying them on changed my mind. I still think I could have worn a potato sack (white/ivory and trimmed with lace, of course) and my family and guests would all say I look like a beautiful bride. They might whisper about my weird taste later, but not then. I'm sure you'll find something great.

Is that the Hsi Lai Temple in Hacienda Heights?

  2. I think if you find something that you really like, even if it's very simple, you'll be very comfortable and happy in it. And enjoy this time. Wedding planning can be a pain in the butt, but it can be fun too!d

  3. Yeah, I don't understand spending $1k on a dress that would be worn once. But I am also a guy, so there are a lot of things I don't understand. ;-)

Good luck with your wedding plans, and I hope you find a very nice dress that you like!

StyleScience Airfoil Sunglasses

Much too long after the death of my last pair of sunglasses, I managed to get my hands on another pair. This one comes from CVS/pharmacy. I figured that since a more expensive pair blew out on me, why not a drugstore one? So after going to speciality stores, I came upon this one that looks and feels good... StyleScience's Airfoil. I didn't notice until later that this is meant for men, but my large head circumference called for it, I think. Anyway, I like that the sides have some ventilation (via a large triangular hole). I hope not to break this one...

Sharkies Prize Pack (giveaway)

It's giveaway time! On a long run recently, I took a couple packs of Sharkies Organic Sports Chews  with me to keep me going on a hot day.  I got through those 15 miles  eating these, versus normal gels.  I've been opting to eat chews over gels in my running nowadays because I just find them more palatable and easier on my stomach for some reason.  Plus, they do pack a few more calories, which is a good thing in this case. I normally associate cute little chews with candy, but these actually contain natural electrolytes.  Plus, they were light to carry and very tasty, too!  Each pack is about 140 calories.  The only downside I found to the sport chews is that they stuck to my teeth a tiny bit more than my normal choices, and the packaging gave me a fight at times.  This could easily be solved by conslidating them into a baggie pre-run, or eating them BEFORE running would be much easier than during. Want to win the prize pack below?  It comes with these Sport Chews, a neat
