Aftershokz Sports Headphones

Ever feel like you're doing yourself a disservice by running with earphones on?  With all the dangers of running outdoors, I don't turn up my headphones too loudly, but I still worry about plugging sound out from my ear(s).  If not for safety, then for the sake of the cilia in my ears...

I was sent these headphones to review, which are different in that they don't actually go inside your ear.

From their representative: "Instead of traditional headphones that cover the ears and earbuds that nest inside ear canals, AfterShokz’s ultra lightweight and durable wraparound headband stays securely in place during rigorous sweat sessions and is equipped with transducers that rest outside the ears to send sound via little vibrations that travel from the cheekbones to the inner ears (bypassing the eardrums completely). An in-line control box offers complete functionality so users can keep mobile devices safely tucked away during activity—power the unit on/off, adjust volume levels, play/pause/advance music and make/take phone calls seamlessly."

Here's what they look like, nestled under my unkempt hair.

The unit stays on because it wraps around the back of your head and hooks atop your ears.  I haven't had any problems with this, and it even has a mic!

The packaging... it comes with a case!

This is definitely not for train commutes, though... I like plugging my ears up from any and all sounds on there (although I probably shouldn't!).

  1. How was the sound quality? I would think there would be a lot of "noise" not plugging into your ears. I am intrigued though! I have seen them for swimming but it was several years ago and they went across your cheekbones. I figured it was a fad.
FYI, I have started a food blog, I would love for you to visit: www.notsopaleo.com

  2. Got a pair to review too. I was really surprised to find out that they actually worked! FYI this is the same technology that will transmit sound on Google Glass. These are really good for specific situations (like trail running, maybe during a race, outdoors around cars, etc.) I like using them at the gym since I workout with a coworker, so we can still chat every now and then. But for running, I would much prefer to drown out the sounds of cars driving by (although the purpose is to be able to hear cars honking or for danger..)

StyleScience Airfoil Sunglasses

Much too long after the death of my last pair of sunglasses, I managed to get my hands on another pair. This one comes from CVS/pharmacy. I figured that since a more expensive pair blew out on me, why not a drugstore one? So after going to speciality stores, I came upon this one that looks and feels good... StyleScience's Airfoil. I didn't notice until later that this is meant for men, but my large head circumference called for it, I think. Anyway, I like that the sides have some ventilation (via a large triangular hole). I hope not to break this one...

Sharkies Prize Pack (giveaway)

It's giveaway time! On a long run recently, I took a couple packs of Sharkies Organic Sports Chews  with me to keep me going on a hot day.  I got through those 15 miles  eating these, versus normal gels.  I've been opting to eat chews over gels in my running nowadays because I just find them more palatable and easier on my stomach for some reason.  Plus, they do pack a few more calories, which is a good thing in this case. I normally associate cute little chews with candy, but these actually contain natural electrolytes.  Plus, they were light to carry and very tasty, too!  Each pack is about 140 calories.  The only downside I found to the sport chews is that they stuck to my teeth a tiny bit more than my normal choices, and the packaging gave me a fight at times.  This could easily be solved by conslidating them into a baggie pre-run, or eating them BEFORE running would be much easier than during. Want to win the prize pack below?  It comes with these Sport Chews, a neat
