WWYD (What Would You Do?)

When I was a kid, some of my favorite books were those "Choose Your Own Adventure" ones.

If you've never experienced such fun, I'll explain.  These books don't read like normal books, from start to finish.  You start them, and then you reach a decision point, which will direct you to another page, and the story keeps unfolding that way until you reach one of the several different endings.

For example:
1) Do your run today. (Turn to page 15)
2) Sleep in. (Turn to page 30)

Next week, I am going to be completely off Tuesday and Wednesday.  This is a decision that I am adamant about, and if you've been following my training plan for my marathon on November 12 at all, you already know that I'm kind of tiring out.  I'm on Week 13 of 16 of the plan and have been more diligent in sticking with a schedule than usual, though most of my burnout is due to other factors besides training.

So, I've reached a "what would you do" moment and thought I'd ask for opinions.  How should I plan out my "Week 14" to account for the days I have off?

Background:
I've been doing a tempo run each week, varying in distances between 3-8 miles.  I should also note they are not easy for me.  I failed the 6-mile one (did it, just not on pace) but have succeeded at the others.  I'm wondering if missing one tempo run will hurt me too much.

Week 13 of 16: (this week)
Monday - 3 miles
Tuesday - 30 min cross-training
Wednesday - 8 miles tempo
Thursday - rest or 3 miles (most likely will do the run)
Friday - rest
Saturday - 14 miles slow
Sunday - rest

Week 14 of 16: (next week)
Monday - 4 miles
Tuesday - 30 min cross-training  off
Wednesday - 8 miles tempo (last long tempo run of the program since taper is close)  off
Thursday - 3 miles
Friday - rest
Saturday - 23 miles slow
Sunday - rest (duh)

I figure my choices are:

A) Run those 4 miles on Monday at tempo
B) Try to run those 8 miles at tempo on Monday
C) Ignore the days off, rest and recharge
D) Try to plug in some tempo miles on Thursday

All right... vote now!

  1. Rest is really one of those underrated aspects of training that make most uncomfortable. Remember - we need to recover to get stronger.

  2. C!

It's my understanding of marathon training that the long run is non-negotiable -- you really HAVE to do those -- but everything else you can be flexible on. You've been diligent with the training, and when it comes to marathon day, those few missed tempo miles won't matter.

Oh, and I luh-ved the Choose YOur Own Adventures when I was a kid too!

  3. I vote for rest. Do as I say, not as I do.
Also I loooooovvvveeed Choose Your Own Adventure books. My favorite involved a kid who went on a field trip to the Statue of Liberty, and, depending on what you chose, ended up falling down steps on the way to the top, hit his head and awoke to find himself in 1805. Suh-weet.

The Return of My Favorite Things

Over the years, I've learned a lot about website optimization, SEO, and all the things I should have been doing with my blog to increase its hits.  Also during that time, I've encountered many blogs that are "well-optimized," and boy, do they feel impersonal.  So that means, I'm just going to carry on however I want (it's not like I'm making any money here [anymore -- yet??])! I'm going to review a few things, not because I was sent anything (though I'm still happy to do that -- contact me !), but because these are things that I use, and if you are so inclined, so should you! I will probably be adding more reviews here, since, let's be honest, they are what bring hits to the blog, and I want people to come and read so I don't feel like I'm writing to a cyber vortex! Invisibobble Hair Tie I have been using this for close to two years now, first tipped-off by a video by one of my favorite YouTube creators, FrmHeadtoToe .  Th...

Original Post: 3/10/11 Sunday, March 20 2011, the day I will run LA Marathon for the 4th time (and embark on my 8th 26.2 journey overall), will also be very special because it will mark the 5th year since I did my FIRST training run with the intention of running a marathon.  (Check out that life-changing post HERE ). Yep, on March 20, 2006, I went to the track and ran my first 3.25 miles with the dreams of marathon glory (or even half-marathon glory). I think it was one of the best decisions I've ever made.  I was a sprint/tra...

Sharkies Prize Pack (giveaway)

It's giveaway time! On a long run recently, I took a couple packs of Sharkies Organic Sports Chews  with me to keep me going on a hot day.  I got through those 15 miles  eating these, versus normal gels.  I've been opting to eat chews over gels in my running nowadays because I just find them more palatable and easier on my stomach for some reason.  Plus, they do pack a few more calories, which is a good thing in this case. I normally associate cute little chews with candy, but these actually contain natural electrolytes.  Plus, they were light to carry and very tasty, too!  Each pack is about 140 calories.  The only downside I found to the sport chews is that they stuck to my teeth a tiny bit more than my normal choices, and the packaging gave me a fight at times.  This could easily be solved by conslidating them into a baggie pre-run, or eating them BEFORE running would be much easier than during.
